CHAPTER 40: CAITLIN

Camp Lake, Maine — Monday, June 27, 1983

Five minutes after visiting the camp office, Caitlin opened a creaky screen door, stepped inside her cabin, and smiled at her Chickasaw Chicks like a proud mother hen. She waved a dozen letters in her hand.

"Who's your mama?"

The girls pointed at Caroline.

"She is!"

"Oh," Caitlin said. "That's right."

She smiled and tried again.

"Well, who's your post lady?"

Tina Torricelli brightened.

"You are!"

"Yes, I am. Here's your mail."

Caitlin placed the letters on a table, stepped back, and watched nine little vultures close in. If there was one thing she enjoyed about being a counselor, it was bringing mail to homesick girls who craved it more than food.

Caroline laughed.

"Do you feel better now?"

Caitlin nodded.

"I needed to prove I was good at something. I tried windsurfing this morning and spent a lot of time in the water. I think I should stick to poker."

"You'll get better," Caroline said. "I did."

"That's because you have a personal trainer."

"Well, whoop-de-doo."

"Ooh!" Karen said. She clawed the air. "A catfight!"

Caitlin looked at her campers, who had returned to their bunks, and saw nine pairs of eyes fixed on the cats. She dialed things back a notch.

"You can return to your letters, girls. Caroline and I are just having a disagreement on impossible activities. We're still friends."

"I'm glad," Sharon Cohen said.

Karen disagreed.

"I'm not. I want some action!"

Caitlin glanced at Caroline, who laughed, and then at Karen, who smiled and raised her fists. She could see that both were having a ball.

"You two are in a good mood."

Karen lifted her nose high.

"Maybe we're just satisfied."

Caitlin laughed.

"Please don't utter my brother's name in the next sentence. I don't want to have to gag myself. Life is hard enough on Mondays."

Tina beamed.

"You guys like Cherokees."

Caitlin frowned.

"Rumors are so vicious."

Caroline sat up in her bunk.

"We did have fun on Saturday."

"So I heard," Caitlin said. She sat on her bed. "Cody said you combed the beaches, ate lobster, and watched the sun set from Cadillac Mountain."

Karen stifled a laugh.

"That's the Disney version."

Caroline looked at Caitlin.

"She didn't watch any sunset."

Caitlin looked at the interested observers. When she saw nine smiles, including three huge grins, she decided to clean things up.

"Please ignore Mama and Sister. Unlike all of you, they grew up in caves and haven't adjusted to the modern world. I'm still working with them."

Several girls giggled.

Caitlin started to say more on the matter, but she stopped when she heard "Assembly" stream through nearby loudspeakers. Like Caroline and Karen, she knew the bugle call signaled the end of quiet time and the beginning of the first activity session of the afternoon. She addressed her charges.

"All right, ladies, you know the drill."

Caroline slid off her bunk.

"Are we all going to air rifle?"

Caitlin nodded.

"We'll have fun. We can compare notes on our weekends while the girls play Annie Oakley. We have some catching up to do."

Caroline smiled.

"Yes, we do."

"You two run ahead," Karen said to her peers. "I'll catch up in a minute. I have to take care of a few things and don't want to put them off.
